The Academic Sustainability Committee determines which courses are Sustainability Focused (and will count towards a Sustainability Academic Subject Certificate). The Academic Sustainability Committee conducts a review of each Sustainability-Designation course proposal submitted, with special attention to the ways in which the course is taught through the lens of sustainability and/or if sustainability is a primary or thematic focus of the course. Proposers must clearly demonstrate how the course is aligned to at least one of three Sustainability Hallmarks: 1) the course demonstrates how concepts of sustainability are connected to local, regional and global issues and applies these concepts to local, regional or global challenges, and/or 2) the course imparts understanding of the science of the environment and how this knowledge can be applied towards creating a more sustainable world, and/or 3) the course describes how traditional and indigenous perspectives or other socio-cultural values and attitudes inform practices of sustainability and encourages students to connect to personal values and attitudes that facilitate sustainable living.
