University of Hawaiʻi President David Lassner sits on the Oʻahu Resilience Strategy Steering Committee. The Oʻahu Resilience strategy provides 44 actions within that directly address the challenge of long-term affordability and the impacts of a climate crisis that are already driving islanders from their homes.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:
As a public institution, the University of Hawaiʻi participates in the Hawaiʻi State Legislature sessions each year to monitor and provide comment on measures which advance sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level. When appropriate, UH has introduced legislation to advance sustainability at its campuses. For example:

[§304A-119] University of Hawaii; net-zero energy goal (SLH 2015): The University of Hawaii shall establish a collective goal of becoming net-zero with respect to energy use, producing as much energy as the system consumes across all campuses, by January 1, 2035.

[§304A-2181] established a Green Special Fund (SLH 2017) established the University of Hawai‘i Green Special Fund (GSF) “to collect and expend revenues that will harness savings realized from energy efficiency investments and other sources of revenue to reinvest into further measures to reduce energy consumption and operating costs towards achieving the University of Hawaiʻi’s net-zero energy goal.”
