The committee typically consists of 20 – 30 members each year who are not given any payment or release time but serve as part of their professional committee duties. Membership includes David Tanaka (Facilities Manager) representing the administration, and Alyssa Gunderson, a representative from Johnson Controls Inc., the contracted company that handles HonCC energy needs. Staff participation is encouraged but due to limits on discretionary committee service time for non-academic staff, there are no staff members this year. In past years, we have had 2-3 non-academic staff members and one administrative liaison. Student representation is encouraged but currently, there are no student members this year due to limited student involvement in student government and campus governance bodies (due to Covid). The Sustainability Committee meets on the second Friday of each month from 1-2 pm. Every committee member is expected to serve on one or more sub-committees which then select chairs and meet separately throughout the year. These sub-committees report back to and get input from the main Sustainability Committee. There is a change in membership each year though many members choose to serve multiple years.

Does the institution have at least one sustainability office that includes more than 1 full-time equivalent employee?:

Additional documentation to support the submission:
Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The UH (System) Office of Sustainability is responsible for broad sustainability coordination for the entire 10-campus university system.

The UH (System) Office of Sustainability functions as a backbone organization, working across UH campuses to complement, support, and enhance the existing sustainability work underway, and to provide coordination capacity for campuses to share information and resources with each other to accelerate action to strengthen the environmental, social, cultural and economic health of our islands’ communities.

The Sustainability Curriculum Coordination Council (SSCCC) was established by EP 4.202 to provide coordination, support, and advice to the campuses regarding scholarly, scientific, and community-engaged research projects in sustainability; integrating sustainability into existing courses across the curriculum; developing new sustainability courses, programs, certificates and degrees; and supporting and assisting current sustainability degree programs to evolve, excel and flourish. The SSCCC reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, however, lacks any full-time staff or credit release time to support its function.
