Sustainable Science Management Program

The BAS in Sustainable Science Management (SSM) comprises a core curriculum in sustainability science, along with foundational sciences and liberal arts. Courses explore sustainability issues in energy, water, community, and others; analyzing the inter-relatedness of topics through systems thinking and dynamics models; monitoring progress through the use of sustainability indicators; and applying experience via internship and capstone.

Hulihia Center for Sustainable Systems

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Hulihia, Center for Sustainable Systems strives to be the centralized location for sustainability in Maui located on Maui College and created by former SSM department alumni and program coordinator Timothy Botkin. In order to achieve this, Hulihia works with individual community members, decision-makers, and other stakeholders at all levels in order to maximize our current sustainability efforts as well as catalyze new initiatives. We provide unique resources to the Maui community so that our goals can be achieved concurrently. This is done through'ike kupuna (ancestral science) and sustainability expertise, highly developed holistic processes, and centralized sustainability efforts.

UH Maui College achieves net-zero goal

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
The University of Hawai'i Maui College has reduced the campus' use of fossil fuel energy by an essential 100% and is the next virtually net-zero University that is up and running. More than 3,300 photovoltaic (PV) modules were installed. UHMC is among the first campuses in the nation to generate 100% of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic systems.

The SSM program is part of UH Maui Colleges curriculum and one of the possible degree paths that students can take. Hulihia is a non-profit organization that stemmed out of the SSM program from alumni student Jonathan Stegner and Program coordinator of SSM, Timothy Botkin. Additionally, Maui college reaches the first school to become net-zero in the nation.
