Sustainability Curriculum Committee
A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The Sustainability Curriculum Committee meets monthly to approve Sustainability (S) designated courses designed to teach students about sustainability across a variety of academic disciplines. This initiative is part of a growing system wide effort to teach students ecological literacy and make the University of Hawaii system a leader in sustainability. We have currently approved numerous Sustainability designated courses to encourage students to learn about the social, cultural, economic, political, scientific, and artistic approaches to sustainability, recognizing the valuable contributions from each academic discipline to thinking about the health of the planet and local communities.

Second Point of Distinction
The Uala Leaf Cafe
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Uala Leaf Cafe on campus employs students to help cook, harvest produce, and compost food waste. The Cafe has at least one student employee at all all times that completely takes care of the processing of campus-grown produce from our sustainable agriculture department. The students work directly top advance efforts to create a circular economy at the Uala leaf Cafe.

Third Point of Distinction
Campus Gardens
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
Windward Community College offers numerous garden/botany opportunities for students to engage in unique sustainability initiatives with our numerous campus gardens. Students participate through volunteering, capstone projects, research, and cultural practice throughout the various gardens which demonstrate themes in sustainable water management, traditional natural medicine, Native Hawaiian plant studies, sustainable agriculture, and Native Hawaiian food crop production.
