RecycleMania: University of Houston has been taking great strides toward a greener future, RecycleMania encourages and enables the campus community to meet the needs of today without compromising the needs of tomorrow. RecycleMania is a fun and friendly competition between colleges and universities nationwide which encourages green initiatives through measured recycling and events which promote sustainability. At the end of RecycleMania, schools are ranked and awarded by categories, according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. Earth Day carnival on-campus: On April 22nd, UH celebrated Earth Day on campus, celebrating the green initiatives which have transformed the University of Houston into one of the most sustainable campuses in the nation. Over 20 tables were set up on a sunny Thursday afternoon to educate the campus community about the green efforts being made on campus, and opportunities to be involved. UH Information Technology, Public Safety, Recycling, Environmental Club and the Library were available to tell students about their part in making the campus sustainable. Demos of how to make recycled paper and compost were informative for those watching and participating, and “eco tours” were given of the green areas on campus, as well as the UH power plant. A weather balloon was launched by students in the atmospheric science program.
