A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty :
Faculty announcements are advertised in areas that are accessible to diverse groups. Each faculty job announcement includes an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action statement that states:
The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
The Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity (OAA/EEO), in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, reviews and approves all faculty job announcements. The OAA/EEO monitors the membership of search committees to ensure that they reflect diversity in gender, race, and ethnicity. An OAA/EEO representative meets with faculty search committees to review and clarify appropriate screening and selection procedures. The OAA/EEO representative recommends interview questions and monitors job related reasons for rejecting applicants.
In addition, the University of Houston, as a federal contractor, is required to develop and maintain annually an Affirmative Action Program (AAP). The AAP is a management tool designed to ensure that federal contractors make “good faith” equal employment opportunity efforts with regard to recruitment and selection. As part of the AAP, UH is required to conduct a job group analysis. When the percentage of minorities and females employed is insufficiently diverse, given their availability, the University establishes annual place goals.
