A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate:
UIC has a campus-wide recycling program for paper, cardboard products and bottles and cans. There are also programs for battery, cell-phone and print cartridge recycling. During the past year, due to grant funding for equipment, we added 6 more buildings to the full recycling program (all previously had some paper), including the UI Medical Center (Hospital). We conducted office staff training where new programs were implemented and campus-wide training of the building service workers who consolidate the materials. Throughout the year we at the Fun Fairs (student activities fair), Sustainability Week and Earth Month events we do hands-on training for attendees. We publicize our success in campus newsletters and massmails. Additionally, waste collected, by UIC drivers, is taken to a waste processing station where recyclables are pulled out of the waste stream, especially cardboard and metals. These are accounted for in our waste diversion rates.
