In the overall strategy for the plan goal 5 states "UIC will be a destination where students, faculty, and staff want to study, work, and live and that attracts visitors from around the world." This is expanded to include investing in cost-effective energy conservation. The second goal (of 4) for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services addresses this more specifically to "Provide an aesthetically pleasing, environmentally sensitive, and safe physical environment for everyone at UIC".

Many of the overall goals of the UIC Strategic Plan address the social dimensions of sustainability. The first goal of the is "UIC will offer an outstanding education at all levels to a diverse student body". The third goal "Through our Great Cities Commitment, UIC will engage with the people, communities, and institutions of Chicago and other great cities of the world in ways that transform lives" speaks to the role UIC strives to play in the urban community around it.

This is expanded to include "incorporate cost-effective energy conservation and sustainable design principles into all projects; meet LEED standards".
