A brief description of the institution’s LGBTQ-inclusive policies, programs and practices:
UIC LGBTQ policy inclusion includes a non-discrimination statement inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. UIC also provides health insurance coverage to employees with same sex partners, accessible process for students to change their name on university records and documents as well changing their gender identity. Students have the option to self identify their sexual orientation and gender on admissions and post enrollment applications. UIC also provides resource for LGBTQ support, such as a resource center with responsibilities for LGBTQ students, paid staff with responsibilities for LGTBQ support services. An ally program or a safe space/safe zone. UIC actively seeks to employ diversity of faculty and staff which include visible out LGBTQ people. UIC has a standing advisory committee that deals with LGBTQ. UIC provides an LGBTQ studies program and specific course offerings. There is active recruitment for faculty for LGBTQ related academic scholarship. UIC offers new faculty and staff training opportunities on gender identity issues. UIC provides an LGBTQ faculty/staff organization. UIC regularly plans LGBTQ social activities, educational events on transgender issues, and educational events surrounding intersectionality of identities for LGBTQ people. UIC offers LGBTQ living space, theme floors and living learning community, roommate matching for LGBTQ students to find LGBTQ friendly roommates, gender inclusive housing for new and returning students. UIC also offers gender inclusive/single occupancy restroom facilities in campus housing and trains residence life and housing staff at all levels on LGBTQ issues and concerns. UIC has a procedure for reporting LGBTQ related bias incidents and hate crimes, as well as active outreach to LGBTQ students and student organizations about campus safety. UIC trains campus police on sexual orientation issues as well as gender identity/expression issues. UIC supports victims of LGBTQ sexual violence and partner violence. UIC provides LGBTQ counseling/support groups, trans inclusive trained counseling staff. LGBTQ inclusive health information and safer sex material is available. Trans-inclusive student health insurance policy which covers on going counseling services and hormone replacement therapy. UIC annually participates in LGBTQ admissions fairs. UIC offers LGBTQ student scholarships and LGBTQ mentoring program to welcome and assist LGBTQ students in transitioning to academic and college life. There is a special Lavendar graduation ceremony for LGBTQ students and allies. Admissions counselors receive LGBTQ inclusive training and resources.
