UIC has approximately 100 different species of trees on its campus, totaling to 4242 trees. The most abundant trees make up anywhere between 5% to 17% of the total distribution of trees on campus. Several species of Hawthorne, Pear-Callery, Linden-Littleleaf each make up 5% of the total distribution. Serviceberry makes up for 6% of the total population, Crabapple trees make up 10% of the total. Maple trees make up 13% and Honey locust make up 17%. The remaining 93 species range between 1% to 4% of the total distribution and together account for 39% of the total population.

UIC has a Peregrine Falcon nest located on campus. The Chicago Peregrine Program works to reintroduce the peregrine falcons, a once federally endangered species, back into the midwest.

The James Woodworth Prairie is 5 acres (2 hectares) of original tallgrass prairie located in Glenview, Illinois. It is the only natural area owned by the University of Illinois at Chicago. Over 100 plant species characteristic of mesic, black-soil Illinois prairie are found on this small site. Many rare prairie invertebrates also successfully persist. As a remnant of the prairie which once covered much of Illinois, Woodworth serves the community by providing an opportunity to experience prairie plants and animals that are now rare. For the intellectual community, Woodworth provides a base from which change can be measured and a challenge to understand how communities can be preserved.
