Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The University of Iowa has a number of sources that emit greenhouse gases (GHG). The majority of greenhouse gas emissions are carbon dioxide (CO2) associated with using coal and natural gas in the Main Power Plant and purchasing electric power from the grid. CO2 emissions from biomass combustion are not counted in this inventory.
From 2003 through 2010, the University of Iowa was a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX). CCX was a voluntary reduction and trading system designed to use financial markets to stimulate reduction in GHG emissions. As part of the CCX membership, the UI was required to have its GHG inventory audited by an independent firm selected by CCX. CCX closed in 2010.
