All new construction and major renovation at the University of Iowa is required to meet or exceed the U.S. Green Building Council's guidelines for silver level LEED certification. Contractors keep extensive records to document construction and demolition waste management for all major projects.

These numbers reflect the diversion activities only from the UI's major construction and renovation projects. Although data is not available for smaller construction and demolition projects, waste materials resulting from these activities are assumed to be directed through the UI's existing diversion programs.
