A brief description of the program or practice:
The University of Iowa considers and uses xeriscape options during design. The plant palette provided to consultants is based on the use of plant material native to this region. The goal is to use plants that require minimal maintenance and that can be left in their natural form with extremely limited watering, trimming or pruning. Species native to Iowa and the Midwest are usually preferable. The UI limits the introduction of exotic plants that are not easily adaptable to extreme cold and hot conditions.
