A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
U of L's LGBT Center launched a project in 2014 to provide students with a preferred name option for class/grade rosters, ID cards, and online learning (Blackboard). Now a reality for all students at U of L, the preferred name option is especially appealing to two student populations: 1. International students who may be using a name that is easier for American people to pronounce; and 2. Transgender students who may be using a name that better matches their gender identity and prevents them from being outed accidentally. In both cases, it’s about removing obstacles and sending a message of inclusion. In honor of the expanded preferred name option, the Cardinal Card office provided replacement cards free to those who bring in their old card. The project was a partnership between the LGBT Center, Information Technology, the Cardinal Card office, and numerous other offices that provide services to students and contributed to the university’s selection as one of Campus Pride’s 25 most LGBT-friendly campuses in the country for 2015.
