A brief description of the formal sustainability course designation program:
In March 2017, sustainability course code searchability went live on UofL's online Course Schedule via a drop-down menu at https://htmlaccess.louisville.edu/classSchedule/setupSearchClassSchedule.cfm
UofL courses with sustainability content across all disciplines are to be coded as either "Sustainability-Focused" or "Sustainability-Related" via the Course Inventory File submitted to the Registrar whenever a course is created or significantly modified. Professors and Chairs are given the following guidance for designating their courses:

"Criteria for Designating Courses for Sustainability (SUST) Coding

1. Definition
• Sustainability is the quality of a system such that the system equitably meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
• Sustainability requires the reconciliation of ecological, environmental, social and economic concerns.

2. Learning Objectives/Outcomes for SUST courses

SUST courses include course-learning objectives concerning the comprehension and application of the following disciplinary/course concepts to sustainability issues:
1) Understand and effectively communicate the concept of sustainability
2) Understand the interconnections among social, economic, and ecological systems
3) Apply sustainability thinking and decision-making to solve current and emerging ecological, environmental, social, and economic crises
4) Develop technical skills or expertise to implement practical solutions to real-world sustainability challenges
5) Integrate ethics and social justice into a framework of sustainability that promotes active citizenship

Sustainability (SUST) course attribute values are:

FOC - Sustainability-focused courses
REL - Sustainability-related courses

Sustainability-focused courses should demonstrate in the syllabus that at least 4 of the 5 objectives above are incorporated throughout the course.

Sustainability-related courses should demonstrate in the syllabus that at least 2 of the 5 objectives above are incorporated into course.

To be considered a sustainability-focused or -related course sustainability objectives in a course description must be clearly stated in the Course Objectives, Lecture topics and/or Assignments in the course syllabus. Please make explicit in the course syllabus which of the learning objectives correspond or pertain to the sustainability objectives above (1-5)."
