PRE-3: Institutional Boundary

This assessment covers all buildings and grounds that the University of Louisville owns and directly controls on all three of its campuses (Belknap, Health Sciences Center, and ShelbyHurst), as well as two off-campus locations: the Garvin Brown III Rowing Facility on the Ohio River, and the Walter L. Moore Observatory and the land at the Horner Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary in Oldham County, Kentucky.

Belknap Campus is considered the school's main campus and is located south of downtown Louisville. At 274 acres, it is home to seven of the 12 academic colleges (and a cast of Auguste Rodin's The Thinker statue). The campus proper also includes several Greek Houses and extensive Athletic facilities, including the Ralph Wright Natatorium, football stadium (Cardinal Stadium), Cardinal Park Ulmer softball stadium, Cardinal Track and Field Hockey Stadium, Lynn Soccer Stadium, Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, and the Jim Patterson baseball Stadium.

Just east of downtown Louisville, UofL's Health Sciences Center (HSC) is the heart of the Louisville Medical Center and contains the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health & Information Sciences, and the School of Dentistry. Also on the campus are several specialty clinics and UofL research buildings and facilities, including a vivarium.

The ShelbyHurst Campus is a 230 acre suburban campus located in eastern Louisville, on Shelbyville Road near Hurstbourne Parkway. Originally the site of the Kentucky Southern College, UofL acquired the land which now houses a conference center, the Kentucky Pollution Prevent Center, business offices and technology endeavors. The ShelbyHurst Campus is also the location of UofL's Center for Predictive Medicine (a Level 3 biosafety facility) and also the Information Technology Resource Center for the US Department of Homeland Security.

Two off-campus facilities UofL owns are also included, the Garvin Brown III Rowing Facility on the Ohio River, as well as the Walter L. Moore Observatory and the land at the Horner Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, a 210 acre wildlife habitat reserve owned by the University of Louisville in Oldham County near Crestwood, Kentucky (about 30 minutes from UofL's main Belknap Campus). Horner is principally used for student research and serves as a reference site for scientific comparison with more urban woodlands and parks. Apart from its use for biological research activities, the university maintains an astronomical observatory on the site, known as the Moore Observatory, which includes one permanent building, a small parking area, two small outbuildings, and a single principal access road (a gated gravel track). The Horner Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Kentucky Organization of Field Stations (KOFS), a network that supports and promotes understanding of natural systems through education, research, and outreach in Kentucky.

Properties leased by or affiliated with the University of Louisville (including the UofL Hospital, UofL Health facilities, UofL Foundation properties, the Speed Art Museum, and affiliated housing properties) are excluded from this assessment, though the UofL students and employees who use these facilities are not. We exclude these facilities from the report, even though some of them are physically located on or adjacent to our campuses, because we do not have direct control over them and cannot assemble the data required. We do, however, work in collaboration with these facilities managers to enhance sustainability whenever possible.
