A waste audit was conducted at the University of Manitoba, and plastic bags were determined to be one of the largest component of landfill waste with 8.29 KG of plastic bags found in the 48 hour data collection period on Fort Garry Campus alone. Multi-Material Stewardship of Manitoba, with the University's Waste Prevention Office and the Office of Sustainability, have since created a plastic bag collection and recycling program with the installation of 8 bins on the Fort Garry Campus and 2 on Bannatyne Campus. The reusable bags will be donated to Winnipeg Harvest for use creating food hampers. The bags that cannot be reused will be sent for proper recycling.
