Commuter Challenge
A brief description of the campaign:
Commuter Challenge is a nation-wide campaign designed to encourage participation in active and sustainable modes of transportation. The University of Manitoba runs a concurrent campaign, that is promoted widely on social media in the weeks leading up to the campaign. Students, staff and faculty who participate in the Commuter Challenge are entered to win additional sustainable prizes.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
In 2019, 335 students, faculty and staff participated for a total of 31,324 km commuted sustainably, avoiding 5,211 kg of CO2 emissions. https://commuter.commuterchallenge.ca/results/2019/city/12388
In 2020, 110 students, faculty and staff participated for a total of 10,963 km commuted sustainably, avoiding 2,384 kg of CO2 emissions. This commuter challenge accounted for participants working from home by allowing everyone to log the distances traveled or distances avoided by working from home.

Sustainability Day
A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The fifth annual UM Sustainability Day event took place on March 10, 2022. The full-day virtual program which was open to UM students, staff, faculty and external partners, aimed to inspire participants to Take Action for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event was hosted by the Office of Sustainability and is held annually to celebrate innovative ideas, research and actions to create a more sustainable future.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
In total, 213 participants registered to hear ten different presentations from UM researchers, students and staff. Throughout the day, approximately 60 participants at any given time were present at each virtual event. To conclude the event, the 2022 UM Sustainability Awards were distributed in six different categories: Undergraduate, Graduate, Student Group, Staff, Faculty and Collaborative Sustainability Awards.

Jack Frost Challenge – This week-long challenge encourages participants to get active in the winter while celebrating the outdoors. The Office of Sustainability promotes the campaign and offers prizes to UM students, faculty and staff who participate. In 2022, 74 university community members participated, with 2,295 km logged (skiing, snowshoeing, walking/running, cycling), and 549 kg of CO2 avoided. https://jackfrost.commuterchallenge.ca/results/2022/city/15535 (teams with the prefix UM)
Plastic Free July – This is a month-long campaign that promotes the use of sustainable and reusable alternatives rather than single use plastics. Tips on how to switch to sustainable products were shared on social media and University newsfeeds. In 2021, the Office of Sustainability hosted a Plastic Free July Researcher Panel, where university faculty discussed their research on the impacts of plastics in our environment. https://news.umanitoba.ca/join-in-plastic-free-july/
Janes Walk – Hosted every year in May, Janes Walk takes place in honor of Jane Jacobs, an American-Canadian journalist, author, theorist, and activist who influenced urban studies, sociology, and economics. In 2020 and 2021, the Office of Sustainability hosted Janes Walks virtually through social media for both the Fort Garry (https://www.instagram.com/tv/B_qHMS-g-3_/?hl=en) and Bannatyne (https://www.instagram.com/tv/B_qBTsRA94H/?hl=en) campuses. In 2022, an in-person walking tour was given by the Campus Planning Office providing a brief overview of the forest canopy at the Fort Garry Campus illustrating the history, challenges, and management practices for protecting and enhancing this integral element of the urban environment.
