The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has established a commitment to diversity as one of its core principles for the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students and for the quality of the academic and campus community. Founded in 1966, UMBC is a selective, historically-diverse, public research university. Diversity is defined at UMBC in its fullest scope, embracing not only racial and ethnic groups and individuals who are or have been underrepresented in higher education, but also including religious affiliation, sexual orientation and gender identity, disability, foreign nationality, non-traditional student status, and other important characteristics.

The follow are under the purview:
Counseling Center
The Counseling Center offers one-on-one support, groups, and workshops to UMBC students to assist with a variety of personal, academic, and career concerns, with a collaborative, goal-oriented, and multiculturally sensitive approach.

Green Dot Violence Prevention and Bystander Intervention Program
Provides training for the UMBC community on new behaviors that are both proactive and reactive in order to make our campus and communities safer. Participants will learn how to identify power-based personal violence, understand that there is always a choice for intervening and that UMBC is a place where violence will not be tolerated. No one has to do everything…Everyone has to do something.

Healthy Relationships Advocates
Advocates are students, faculty, and staff who come together to discuss a range of issues related to healthy relationships on campus, including skill-development, intersecting identities, and socio-political contexts.The goals of the program are to systematically raise awareness and support for a campus to be without relationship violence, create an environment that encourages healthy relationships, and encourage victims and survivors of relationship violence to come forward and receive support.

LGBTQ Faculty/Staff Association
The LGBTQ Faculty/Staff Association promotes and supports opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer faculty and staff at UMBC, and reflects LGBTQ visibility and diversity to the wider community. Additional LGBTQ resources are available here.

LGBTQ Student Union
The LGBTQ Student Union (LSU) is an LGBTQ+ organization established for the purpose of advocating for the interests of the LGBTQ students at UMBC and hosting events to promote inclusion on campus. Additional LGBTQ resources are available here.

Mosaic, Interfaith Center, and Queer Student Lounge
The Mosaic: Center for Culture and Diversity is a center for diversity education and collaboration at UMBC. The Center is committed to empowering all campus constituents to be socially aware and responsible members of our community. The Interfaith Center (IFC) is dedicated to creating, fostering, and supporting interfaith collaboration at UMBC. The IFC provides space for students, staff, and faculty from all religious and spiritual backgrounds to meet, worship, discuss, and celebrate their individual and collective faiths and belief systems. The Queer Student Lounge is a safe space for LGBTQA people to relax, study, and just hang out. Information on the lounge and additional LGBTQ resources are available here.

USM and UMBC Shared Governance
The University System of Maryland shared governance includes many system-wide representative bodies, which serve as Councils and Workgroups for the chancellor and other system administrators. UMBC shared governance includes the University Steering Committee and faculty, staff, and student senates.

Universities at Shady Grove Center for Counseling and Consultation
The Center for Counseling and Consultation (CCC) provides comprehensive counseling, psychological, and consultative services to the students, faculty, and staff of the Universities at Shady Grove campus. All services are free and confidential. The center also offers workshops and bystander training for students, faculty, and staff.

We Believe You
We Believe You is an activist/discussion group for any persons affected by sexual assault or wanting to help survivors of sexual assault, as well as a group interested in bringing about awareness for sexual assault victims. We Believe You’s main focus will be on taking action by volunteering/helping the people in our community who have been affected by sexual assault.

Wellness Initiative
UMBC is a resilient community committed to the health and well-being our faculty, staff, and students, and that understands the connections between self-care and our responsibility to care for the whole. The Wellness Initiative supports community members in wellness activities that sustain us on a physical, mental, and emotional level to carry out the mission and vision of UMBC.

Women’s Center
The Women’s Center advances gender equity from an intersectional feminist perspective through co-curricular programming, support services, and advocacy for marginalized individuals and communities. The Center prioritizes critical social justice as our community value, with a deliberate focus on women, gender, anti-racism, and feminism.

University Health Services (UHS) and Health Promotion
The mission of the UHS Office of Health Promotion is to provide accurate and comprehensive education about health and wellness for the UMBC campus community. The UHS vision is to create a culture in which all members of the UMBC community have the information and skills they need to make responsible, well-informed decisions regarding their health and well-being while at UMBC and throughout their lives.
