Although UMass generated almost 6 million kwh of on-site renewable electricity on the campus in FY22, the only project for which the institution retains or has retired the associated environmental attributes for is the 16kW Deerfield farm solar PV (10,430 kwh=35 MMBTU).
It should be noted that under the Massachusetts state SMART program, only utility companies can retain and claim the renewable energy attributes of renewable electricity generating units, therefore the only way for UMass to claim points for this section of the credit would be to purchase replacement REC's in the form of utility-provided green power purchasing options.

UMass Amherst has significantly increased the on-site renewable energy generation over the past decade.
Prior to FY15, UMass installed ground source heat pumps in the Police Station and the International Programs Building (formerly Research Admin)
In FY15 the campus had 16 kW of solar PV energy from the Deerfield Farm.
In FY16, UMass Amherst installed a 336 kW solar PV canopy system.
In FY17, UMass Amherst installed a 5.5 MW solar PV system on 7 different sites (2 parking canopies and 5 rooftops).
In FY18, UMass installed ground source heat pumps in Crotty Hall.
In FY22, UMass installed two more large PV canopy systems on Lots 21/22 and Lot 49 with a battery system fully charged by the solar generation.
