A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
For the purposes of the STARS report, FY2019 was used as the data was available. As data is further studied, prior years will be added to the SIMAP public reporting.
UMass reports annually to the MA DOER Leading by Example Program, which uses the 2004 baseline year as a benchmark for tracking progress on scopes 1 & 2. Since 2004 UMass Boston has grown significantly in size; both energy-intensive and non-energy-intensive buildings have been built and removed. Normalizing for building uses, especially for the science complex and garages recently deconstructed, will help build a better comparative profile.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
Energy conservation efforts have been implemented in high-energy-use buildings like the Science Center during the pandemic and maintained post-pandemic. Scheduling and hiring energy management personnel have helped bring energy use down. An old science center was torn down during this time. The first residence hall at UMass Boston opened in 2018; it is a LEED building.
The grid has become greener through the efforts of the RPS.
