Sustainability Ambassadors Program
A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
Sustainability Ambassadors at UMass Lowell play vital roles in providing personal sustainability connections to the campus community. The Sustainability Ambassadors program was established by the Climate Action Plan Steering Committee back in 2012 and has representation from each functional area on campus. Peer-to-peer examples include our Director of Campus Recreation instructing colleagues on how to utilize our Freewheelers Bike Share Program, students educating students on recycling programs and sustainable move-out operations, and key faculty serving as a resource for the entire campus community that are interested in sustainability teaching and research.
A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
The Sustainability Ambassadors program is targeted to all UMass Lowell employees. Sustainability Ambassadors are referenced on the central UMass Lowell sustainability website. Their input and engagement is essential to UMass Lowell's overall approach to sustainability. While the Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy serves as the fulcrum of UMass Lowell's overall program, Sustainability Ambassadors enhance and expand access and knowledge across the entire university.
Example: Executive Director of Planning and Project Management, Adam Baacke is an internationally renowned planning expert. Adam weaves sustainability concepts and approaches into the campus planning, project management, and place-making processes and serves as our go-to expert for all things related to land-use and planning. Adam and his team engage with the entire campus population on projects large and small with sustainability being a core focus of their work.

2nd Program
UMass Lowell Green Office Program
A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):
The Green Office Program encourages and facilitates energy and waste reduction practices in offices across campus.
UMass Lowell formally launched its Green Office Program just before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
How Does It Work?
Based off a successful program at our sister campus, UMass Amherst, the offices that choose to participate in the program work to complete requirements based on a five-level scale: bronze, silver, gold, green and evergreen. Each level is based off of seven topics: energy, waste and recycling, kitchens, bathrooms, travel, purchasing and involvement, which outline more sustainable office behaviors and operations. Completion of the program occurs once an office fulfills the criteria for the “evergreen” level. Offices will need to renew their certifications to maintain their "evergreen" standing every year.
Our Sustainability Eco-Reps work individually with a Department Liaison (a role assigned to a staff member in the office) to devise a plan customized to meet the office’s needs. The system allows for a friendly competition between offices to see who can reach the evergreen certification. Recognition is rewarded for every level completed with a congratulatory certificate.

All offices are the target audience of the Green Office Program. Staff and faculty that do not work in office locations would not necessarily be subject to the Green Office program but there is certainly passive learning that takes place e.g. Facilities Housekeeping staff are a vital component of the Green Office program.
