The Sustainability Action Plan include goals related to Sustainability in the Curriculum. The plan used the gap analysis generated after our Gold rating to STARS from AASHE to establish quantitative and qualitative goals in that regards: Specific to Academics: - Increase the number of departments that include sustainability in their learning outcomes. - List the SUST designated courses in the electives offered in the new programs focused on Sustainability. - Offer two “Sustainability in the Curriculum” workshops for faculty per year, and increase the number modified existing syllabi. https://greenu.miami.edu/about-us/sustainability-planning/index.html

The Office of Sustainability and the Sustainability Steering Committee released a Sustainable Operation Plan for 2035 in 2022. It its implementation started in 2022. Specific to Operations: - Create a set of UM Sustainable Operations and Maintenance guidelines for existing buildings - Invest in Energy Efficiency retrofits, sustainable Operations & Maintenance best practices, as well as conservation campaigns to further reduce our energy consumption - Create a pre-consumer composting program for all the dining halls - Reduce the use of disposable plastic in on campus Dining restaurants, following the Plastic Free Canes Roadmap - Increase the offering of plant-based menu options across Dining services Phase out the use of glyphosates herbicides. - Increase the landscape areas managed organically - Increase the installation of smart irrigation systems Increase the amount of Environmentally Preferred Products in UM approved catalogs - Increase Level 2 charging stations available on campus from 6 to 18 in 2022. - Adoption of mobile applications to facilitate carpooling, mass-transit, or other alternative transportation modes - Reduce the University’s waste generation and increase its diversion rate from landfill with a 90% goal by 2035 - Reduce our Potable water use per weighted campus https://greenu.miami.edu/about-us/sustainability-planning/index.html

The Sustainability Action Plan include goals related to Administration and Governance. The plan used the gap analysis generated after our Gold rating to STARS from AASHE to establish quantitative and qualitative goals in that regards. Specific to Administration: - Use STARS to build a triennial Sustainability Action Plan covering all areas of Sustainability. - Include a sustainable living section in our online Student Housing Village resources. - Include our Sustainability Mission Statement in the University published strategic plans endorsed by the Board of Trustees - Create a program specifically designed to recruit faculty from underrepresented groups - Increase the percentage of students graduating with no interest-bearing student loan debt or for whom no out-of-pocket tuition is required

A brief description of the institution’s formal sustainability commitments, including the specific initiatives selected above:

In 2007 President Donna E. Shalala signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. This historical event sent a strong and unequivocal message about University of Miami’s dedication to sustainability. As part of this commitment, a Climate Action Plan was designed in 2009. The University of Miami, since then, has engaged in the path of Carbon Neutrality with the first milestone of 20% reduction achieved in 2020. The new Sustainable Operation Plan is designed with the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.
