A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Program on Intergroup Relations' co-curricular programs are developed for students to learn about social inequalities and social justice outside the classroom. The CommonGround Workshop Program is one way that student organizations, residence halls, Greek life, classes, and other campus communities can request workshops on topics such as (but not limited to) racism, sexism, classism, or heterosexism. Workshops are designed around a 1.5 to 3 hour time frame and engage participants in dialogues about these complex issues within society. The goal is to increase awareness and knowledge on issues of social justice, identity, diversity, and intergroup relations. The University of Michigan also offers an Intercultural Leadership Seminar during spring break which focuses on exploring culture & identity, experiencing intercultural communication and conflict, leadership development through intercultural competence, leading with passion; putting it in action, and transforming the experience
