A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
The University of Michigan’s Office of the Vice President for Government Relations and Office of the Vice President for Research have a Washington D.C. office responsible for advocacy efforts with the federal government. As a major research institution, we are engaged with policy makers on many sustainability-related issues. These efforts include working with the Michigan delegation, appropriations subcommittees, and authorization committees to advocate important sustainability research funding streams such as energy innovation hubs, energy frontier research centers, funding for the Department of Energy’s office of science, and ARPA-E and others. U-M’s advocacy efforts at the federal level also involve working through many different higher education associations and organizations, such as the Association of American Universities, that share our desire to see sustainability advance in Washington and throughout the country.
