Campus Engagement

Yes

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Campus Engagement:
Alice David, an international studies student and president of the student eco-leaders group from 2017 to 2019, received three engagement credits (the equivalent of one course) for her commitment through the program.

She has devoted her efforts to setting up numerous activities such as waste collection, DIY workshops, the organization of lunchtime conferences as well as increasing the group's visibility.

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Public Engagement:
EDD 6005 - Knowledge Mobilization in Environment and Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Unit collaborated with students on the EDD-6005 Master's course in Environment and Sustainable Development for its Darlington Ecological Corridor Project in the winter 2017 term. The students were mandated to work on:
- the wooded project and wetlands
- pedestrianization of the Louis-Colin section
- public consultation at Darlington Place
- reflection on the Bates-Darlington interchange
- the visibility and mitigation issue at the MIL Campus

Supervised work - Master's degree in environment and sustainable development

The Universite de Montreal's GHG emissions assessment (scope 1 and 2 as well as part of scope 3) was conducted from January to June 2019 by Thierry Gras Chouteau, a master's student, as part of a 36-week supervised study, supervised by professors Sara Teitelbaum and Qussai Samak of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Internship - Bachelor in Nutrition

Two students in the nutrition program, Marie-Pier Leroux and Isabelle Plamondon-Dubois, completed an internship in institutional food services in the fall of 2018.

The internship consisted in developing sustainable recipes to be incorporated into the cafeteria menu while respecting the parameters of meal preparation (cost, standardized recipe, etc.).

Summer job - Biological Sciences

In the summer of 2018, Anne Rousseau, a bachelor's student in biological sciences, completed an internship on plant biodiversity (characterization of wetlands and the removal of invasive species such as buckthorn). This internship is part of the University's 2012-2020 Biodiversity Plan.

Internship - Master of Management - International Logistics

From September 2018 to February 2019, Benjamin Krajcik, a master's student at HEC Montreal (business school affiliated with the Universite de Montreal) in logistics completed an internship on responsible procurement. The 24-week internship identified measures to implement a responsible procurement strategy for the University's procurement department.

Final Year Course - Civil Engineering(Polytechnique Montreal)

In 2017 and 2018, graduates of the civil engineering program at Polytechnique Montreal (engineering school affiliated with the Université de Montréal) had to propose management projects for stormwater from Mount Royal.

Internship - Communications

Marilyne Désy, a student in the Bachelor of Communication program, developed the Mon campus a velo, “Biking My Campus” campaign through an internship, which aims to promote cycling on our campuses. The campaign proposes that students and employees encourage cycling as a commuting mode for reasons of healthy lifestyles and to reduce the impact of travel. Activities, contests, conferences and screenings are offered mainly during the last two weeks of September each year since then.

Universite de Montreal’s Sustainable Development Unit is committed, through its Sustainable Development Ecosystem, to participating in the creation of a committed, responsible and resilient community.

The Sustainable Development Ecosystem consists of a living laboratory of sustainability where projects emanating from the University's action plan or other stakeholders are carried out by one or more students as part of a credited academic activity.

Projects are developed and implemented in collaboration with the departments and professors concerned. They are also interdisciplinary when the case allows it. They must include a mandatory sustainability training objective.

The information presented here is self-reported.
