UNL has a formal plan to expand sustainability curriculum by creating a new minor: Society and the Environment. This minor will look to expand student interest as well aim to incentivize new sustainability based courses. The minor has officially passed and will be in place starting Fall of 2016. A brief description of the plan(s) to advance sustainability in Energy:
This Campus Energy Management Plan sets forth a goal of reducing energy consumption in
state funded buildings on city and east campuses by at least 15% by 2015. The existing campus
energy infrastructure and current building energy use indices are presented to provide
background and context.
Several concurrent energy conservation strategies are recommended to meet the stated
reduction goal. These encompass the functional areas of: existing buildings, new construction
and renovations, utility plants, energy data collection and analysis, communication, energy
project processes, and energy information systems.
In addition to the main goal of energy reduction, this plan will achieve several other objectives
including:
- Reduction of energy costs, peak electric / gas loads and greenhouse gas emissions
- Improved communication with the campus community regarding energy usage and
ongoing conservation efforts

Today on City Campus, conflicts between pedestrians, bicycles and cars are common within the core of campus, particularly along the 14th Street Mall and Vine Street. The plan creates complete streets on Vine Street, R Street, a new X Street, and 16th Street. Complete streets separate and balance safe places for bikes, pedestrians, the campus shuttle, and vehicles. The plan also relocates large parking lots from the walkable core of campus to sites that are easily accessible by vehicle at campus gateways, minimizing the overlap of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The campus’s complete streets work together with the mall system, which provides internal circulation for pedestrians and bikes. North-south campus malls will have dedicated lanes for bikes that connect to the complete streets network.
