A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The Registrar provided the Office of Sustainability with a list of all courses offered during our academic time period (Spring 2020 through Spring 2021). That data set included course narratives that sometimes extended beyond published course descriptions. Based on the AASHE STARS Sample keywords to help identify sustainability challenges (derived from the Earth Charter and SDG targets), keyword searches were used to highlight possible sustainability-focused and -inclusive courses. Additional review of those courses included published course descriptions and online syllabi and learning outcomes (only available for some colleges and departments). We also searched for courses for which faculty have participated in Sustainability in the Curriculum Workshops and submitted plans for a unit or course. For course lists, we did not include internships, individual studies, thesis/dissertation, clinical experiences, ensembles, physical education or other courses that could be identified as individual-based instruction. We did not count courses with less than 5 registered students, or listings for zero-credit. Sections of a course were counted as a separate course. In cases where sustainability-related content was only identified for certain sections of a course (e.g. based on the instructor), then only those sections were counted as sustainability courses. Thus, the number of courses offered will not equal the number of courses on the inventory. The inventory lists the course once, even if it was offered multiple times.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each offering or section of a course was counted as an individual course
A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
Sections of a course were counted as a separate course. In cases where sustainability-related content was only identified for certain sections of a course (e.g. based on the instructor), then only those sections were counted as sustainability courses. Thus, the number of courses offered will not equal the number of courses on the inventory. The inventory lists the course once, even if it was offered multiple times.
