The Master of Science degree in Sustainability & Environment offers four areas of concentration: Natural Science; Society and Equity; Economics and Development; and Aesthetics and Ethics. Students have the choice to pursue thesis, capstone project, or internship options, making the program highly customizable.
Students will pursue a combination of interdisciplinary and departmental electives along with core GES courses. This interdisciplinary approach, which includes courses in aesthetics, ethics, economics and development, society and equity, and natural science, prepares students for a growing set of job prospects in the area of environment and sustainability.

Second Point of Distinction
Diversity and Sustainability Through Building Practices
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
In fiscal year 2019-20, 35.5% of UNC Greensboro's construction dollars went toward Historically Underutilized Businesses. In addition to the construction percentage, Facilities had 25.7% designer HUB participation for the Annual Service Agreements.
UNC Greensboro also continues to design all of our new buildings to minimum LEED Silver standards. With the recent completion of the new Nursing and Instructional Building, which achieved LEED Gold, UNCG now has 20 LEED Certified buildings on campus, accounting for 25% of our total gross square footage.
The NIB is the new home of the School of Nursing. It also houses labs and classrooms for the School of Health and Human Sciences and the Departments of Biology and Chemistry. The 180k square foot building incorporates biophilic design, a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment. Other features include: high-energy efficiency standards with the use of LED lighting, heat recovery systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and 30 kilowatt photovoltaic systems on the roof (a first at UNCG).

Energy and water consumption per gross square foot at UNCG have decreased significantly since 2003, the baseline year established by the State of North Carolina. Overall, UNCG has reduced total kWh of electricity per square foot by 25% since 2003. Likewise, natural gas consumption per gross square foot has been reduced by 14% since 2003. Though we continue to grow in size, we do so efficiently. Overall, Energy Use Intensity (EUI) at UNCG has decreased by 21% since FY03.
Additionally, UNCG continued to participate in the State of North Carolina’s Utility Savings Carry Forward program (HB 1292). The related utilities savings going into FY22 was $981,009 with a total of $4.41 million in avoided costs over the past seven years since the start of the program.
