INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY COUNCIL

To work toward reaching inclusive excellence, in 2020, Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings established the Inclusion and Diversity Council at UNC Pembroke. The Council, with a broad campus representation, is charged with the development of an inclusion policy for our campus, benchmarking with peers, developing key priorities and metrics using the data and input we have received, supporting the work of other organizations on campus with inclusion and diversity responsibilities, and collaboratively implementing programs to strengthen our campus community. The Council is comprised of students, faculty, and staff.

OFFICE OF STUDENT INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY

The Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity (OSID), housed within the Division of Student Affairs, values the opportunity to celebrate and showcase the institution’s rich diversity as reflected in community members’ race, age, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, faith, religion, national origin, citizenship, social and economic class, ideology and other identities. OSID is committed to advancing equity and inclusion for all community members through intercultural engagement, social justice initiatives, education and student-centered programming. OSID is building an inclusive culture, based in alliances across differences, that addresses and removes barriers to success, fosters freedom from prejudice and promotes a community of empathy and mutual respect for the identities of all members.

DIVERSITY AWARENESS PLANNING COMMITTEES

The Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity coordinates nine diversity awareness planning committees that are student-led and student-centered. The committees develop programming to celebrate and showcase the rich history, culture and contributions of UNC Pembroke’s diverse communities. They committees are also open to students, faculty and staff. The committees are: American Indian; Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American; Black and African American; Gender Equity and Inclusion; Hispanic and Caribbean American; Interfaith Council; LGBTQ+, Multicultural; and Neurodiversity and Disability.

The Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity (OSID) strives to create a robust and inclusive campus environment that provides a transformative intercultural experience. Consequently, OSID provides training and education that promotes: increased awareness of self and others; an understanding of and knowledge about diverse cultures, identities, and communities; and, strategies and techniques for taking action to communicate and work with diverse groups, identify and openly discuss cultural differences and issues, challenge biases and discrimination and facilitate the development of a culture that is inclusive. As a result, students will be better prepared to engage in and contribute to a diverse and interdependent global society.
