A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contribute to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
Ninety-seven percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills, including the waste from the demolition of the original 7,000-square-foot former home of the Center for Social Concerns, previously located on the same site.
The University of Notre Dame had three major construction projects completed in FY09. At the completion of Ryan Hall, a residence hall on campus, 970.2 tons of construction and demolition waste was diverted from the landfill. Only 300.3 tons were sent to the landfill for that specific project.
Stinson-Remick Hall, another project completed in 2009, recycled 95.76% of the materials by weight that left the jobsite. 4,739 tons of concrete, 348 tons of wood, 77 tons of metal, 115 tons of drywall left the jobsite, but only 300 tons of trash was sent to the landfill.
