A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Business Operations Diversity Working Group was enacted in response to the University-wide initiative / mandate that called for greater diversity within the employee culture here at the University of Notre Dame. The goal is to aid in the development of an inclusive and diversity-aware community.
The Working Group took part in a three-session diversity training about how to understand the issues, address the different definitions of diversity, and how to be more effective in promoting diversity on campus.
The group employs a number of educational mediums including a cross-cultural calendar entitled “Diversity Matters” that rolled out in January of 2011 and other various social gatherings our first of which was a Black History Month event in February of 2011. The group strives to educate our community on various cultures, ethnicities, and lifestyles - first and foremost.
Also, by expanding upon the common definitions associated with diversity, which often only include sex and race, the group is attempting to encourage campus to recognize the diversity that can be found within all individuals. By way of luncheon lectures, formal gatherings, small social events, and additional educational materials. The group is hopeful that the efforts will continue to enrich the Notre Dame Community in accordance with its’ Catholic Mission.
