Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
Yes
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
The University's Spirit of Inclusion articulates that we strive to create a community characterized by "mutual respect, hospitality, and warmth in which none are strangers and all may flourish." With this commitment in mind, we want to ensure all students, regardless of differences in background, identity, or views, are treated with dignity and respect and feel a strong sense of belonging at Notre Dame.
In order to help determine whether we are meeting our aspirations, the University administers the Inclusive Campus Student Survey to assess the overall climate on campus related to diversity and inclusion. All students at all levels, both undergraduate and graduate, are asked to participate and share their experiences.
The 2020 survey was the second administration of the Inclusive Campus Student Survey. The survey instrument was developed by the Office of Strategic Planning & Institutional Research (OSPIR) and in consultation with numerous students, faculty, and staff.
All individual answers are held in the strictest confidence. No one will examine individual answers to any questions, and survey results are not reported in a manner that could identify individuals. Consistent with Notre Dame’s prior administration of this survey, aggregated results will be shared with the university community.

A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
The University looks at the overall results, and each department also looks at its own results. When the results are compared to previous surveys, trends emerge. Did prior action areas improve? Have new opportunities developed? A lot can change in two years, and feedback starts the conversations that have already led to many positive changes.
Every member of the Notre Dame community is expected to treat others with mutual respect, hospitality and warmth. This expectation is reflected in numerous University policies and guidelines. The University also maintains several offices and resources, that are committed to addressing questions or concerns regarding conduct that is not consistent with the University’s expectations. Ultimately, the purpose behind these policies, guidelines, offices, and resources is to promote an environment where all of the University’s faculty, staff and students feel welcome and valued.
