Does the institution have a local offsets program through which the institution seeks to offset its greenhouse gas emissions by implementing projects that reduce GHG emissions in the local community?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the program:
The UO funds a carbon offset program at Lochmead Farms in 1) Junction City, Oregon, just 15 miles northwest of campus. This program has funded a methane digester for the farm. This anaerobic digester coverts methane, produced from the manure, into enough electricity to power about 200 homes in Lane County. This will significantly reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from the farm. Lochmead Farms produces milk for 43 DariMart stores, which they own and operate in and around Eugene.
2) The UO's sustainability director, Steve Mital, did a local offset for a conference held at UO (the "Thinking Through Nature Conference") in June 2008. Students calculated the travel emissions of all participants. $2100 was collected from conference attendees to buy materials for an offset program that insulated steam pipes.
