The charter or mission statement of the committee or a brief description of the committee's purview and activities :
1. The previous position of Employment Equity (EE) Officer has been replaced with the position of Diversity and Inclusion Specialist. The purpose of this new position is to go beyond meeting the basic employment requirements of the four designated EE groups (women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal peoples, members of visible minorities) to assessing and subsequently implementing measures, policies and procedures that will enhance universal accessibility, and therefore sustainable employment, for an overall greater number of people. The new position also functions as an Office for employees, services and faculties who wish to propose and promote accessibility and inclusion initiatives and/or who require consultation with an HR representative should they wish to discuss problematic situations related to issues of diversity, accessibility and inclusion.
2. In line with the new goals of the new position, the Diversity and Inclusion Specialist, is in the process of recruiting new members who will help to develop and promote the new mandate through a Diversity Committee/Council. Previously, the committee’s mandate was focused on Employment Equity issues and was named the Employment Equity Committee.
The reconstruction of the committee is still underway as various laws (i.e., AODA – Ontario Accessibility Act) actually require the formation of a number of committees. At this point we are focusing our efforts on the formation of committees that are legally required before proceeding to the formation of an overall D&I committee.
3. The charter or mission and subsequent activities, will be agreed, upon by the new committee in the fall of 2012.
