In 2012, the University conducted a salary benchmarking survey leading to the implementation of a new compensation structure based on identified peer institutions and the prevailing wages in the Richmond, VA market. At the time the market rate for our lowest paid employees was determined to be $9.53/hour. With the intention to provide a compensation package to help employees meet their basic needs, the University convened a number of focus groups and a task force comprising employees from different divisions and job levels across the University. The result was a new minimum wage of $10.00/hour with free, University-provided GRTC bus passes and at least one health plan option with 100% University-paid premiums for individuals. Since then, the University’s minimum wage has increased to $11.00/hour with free bus passes and a premium free health care option. In addition, the University offers tuition remission covering credit and non-credit courses to employees and their dependents. Eligible employees receive 14 paid holidays, up to 15 vacation days, and 10 sick days and 2 personal days.

For Part 2 of this credit, the University of Richmond elects to assess the compensation it provides its employees against 120% of the poverty guideline for a family of four ($14.02). We use our complete benefit package which includes, health insurance, free GRTC bus passes, employer-paid short and long-term disability, 8 weeks of parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child for either parent, a 5% university retirement contribution plus a 5% university match totaling a 10% university retirement contribution, and 100% tuition remission qualify the University to offset 20% of the wage criteria for benefited employees, leaving a target wage of $11.22. 986 employees receiving benefits earn more than $11.22/hr. 207 employees not receiving benefits earn more than $14.02/hr. Therefore, 1,193 out of 1,860 receive sustainable compensation.
