A brief description of the institution’s employee community service initiatives:
In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, University of Richmond plans a variety of activities inviting students, faculty and staff to honor the holiday, serve in the community and learn about civil rights in Richmond. Following the day of service, all are invited to a commemoration event and reception with the University. The university is closed for the MLK Day holiday, but the campus community is invited to participate in a day of service and learning. Events in the past year included an exhibition at the University's Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of art focused on growing up in civil rights Richmond, a campus commemoration ceremony, and a discussion with the President's Commission on history and identity. Service opportunities included various farm tasks at an urban agriculture site, cleanup along the James River, and clearing brush and restoring pathways at a historic African American cemetery.
University of Richmond’s MLK Day events are co-sponsored by the Office of Common Ground and the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement and organized by an array of campus offices.
