The University of Richmond is recognized for our commitment to improving the sustainability performance of our buildings. All new buildings constructed on campus are required to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver status or better. LEED requirements influence the design, building, and maintenance of buildings to provide a safe and healthy workspace while minimizing impact on land, air, and water.
There are now 14 LEED certified buildings on campus and 1 more under review.

Our Campus Master Plan requires all new construction or major renovation projects to be designed and built using the USGBC's LEED rating system with a goal of scoring Silver or higher. Westhampton Center, Queally Hall, Westhampton Hall, South Campus Apartments (a.k.a. Gateway Village), Jeter Hall, Thomas Hall, Queally Center, and North Court Residence are all registered with the USGBC and are in varying stages of the application process.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
All of our new construction is required to be designed to meet the LEED Silver standards or above. As such, we register all of our new construction projects with the USGBC and apply for LEED Silver (or above) certification or greater once the construction is completed. LEED is first discussed for each project during the design phase and the focus remains through implementation and documentation.
