A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
A sustainability orientation pamphlet is sent to all students, including new students, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students at the start of every academic year. The pamphlet contains simple guidelines for students to reduce their carbon footprint in various areas of daily life at USD, and provides tips on how to engage in a more sustainable move in process. Scholastic Assistants, who attended a general sustainability training, are on the ground during move-in weekend to educate new students about sustainable practices at USD and to assist them in reducing waste during that first weekend experience.
Resident and Scholastic Assistants receive sustainability training prior to new student arrival. They are consequently equipped with sustainability knowledge to pass along to new students and are informed on how to create events and programs for their students that incorporate sustainable practices. The training sessions also delve into waste diversion and what can be saved, refused, reduced, reused, and recycled. Every dorm room is provided with a recycling bin and students are given information as to what can be recycled in the bin.
A Pre-Orientation (P-O) Trip is organized by the Outdoor Adventures office that helps create awareness by the “Leave No Trace” principles. Other initiatives incorporate sustainability tours as part of their orientation programs, including an introduction to USD’s solar panel systems for generating renewable energy.
