A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The USC Office of Orientation Programs oversees all freshman and transfer student orientation activities, which take place throughout the summer for fall admits in winter for spring admits. Orientation sessions are comprised of various campus tours, workshops, and information sessions. The Office of Sustainability participates in the two-hour "Campus Resource Fair" at each orientation session for ten sessions total. The fair gives each group of new students ample time to explore campus resources and interact with staff and students from various organizations. Through the resource fair, the Office of Sustainability is able to interface with each new freshman and transfer student and their families. This gives us a chance to outline the high-level sustainability goals of the university, explain how they can get involved, answer any questions the students have, and more.
On August 16th, 2023, the Office of Sustainability also tabled at the the Orientation Move-in Meet & Greet which included graduate and undergraduate students. During this tabling event, Sustainability Staff and Interns handed our hydration station map QR stickers and gave out free laundry sheets.
In addition to the in-person sessions, the Office of Sustainability also participates in two Virtual Orientation Open House sessions each semester through the USC Trojan Engagement Center portal. Students have access to the virtual booth throughout orientation, but they are able to meet virtually during the two Open House sessions to chat in real-time with Sustainability staff.
