The University's campus designs principles contain direction in reducing non-porous surfaces in public areas. This is accompanied by increase in permeable surfaces and infrastructure which increase ground penetration and directing rainwater to rain tanks and recapture tanks. The University has been increasing its recapture tank capacity since 2015 including natural recapture like the Gadigal Green natural filtration ponds. It has also invested in new infrastructure such as plumbing the recapture tank system into the main irrigation system to reduce potable water draw down for watering key lawn systems on the Camperdown/Darlington campus. Rain tanks on buildings are linked directly to their plumbing for use in non-drinking purposes like toilet-flushing.

The University of Sydney Environmental Sustainability Policy 2015 outlines the University's responsible water use and conversation mandate: Conserve and efficiently use energy and water resources, through:
(a) improving the energy and water efficiency of University buildings,
infrastructure and farms;
(c) embedding environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in appropriate
University design, construction and operational standards;
The University's Sustainable Building Framework also outlines water conservation and recovery infrastructure requirements in design and fit out of new and refurbished buildings under direct operation of the University (i.e. non-leased spaces). This internal framework will be replaced by the Green Star framework under the University's new Sustainability Strategy.
