A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The Sulitest is an international educational initiative for assessing core sustainability literacy. A standardised test used by over 700 academic institutions and non-academic organisations in more than 60 countries, the Sulitest survey instrument serves as a basic reference to raise awareness of sustainable development and to improve sustainability literacy worldwide.
The University of Tasmania adopted the Sulitest in 2021 as a pilot to determine how we might best make use of literacy assessment and the tools available to help track our sustainability efforts.
The Sulitest consists of an International Core Module that assesses general factual knowledge on the broad themes included in a holistic understanding of sustainability and key thematic subjects, rather than focusing on applied knowledge. The Module consist of 30 multiple-choice questions.
Completing the Sulitest is a great opportunity for students to discover what they know about sustainable development around the world. As the test was offered in 'learning mode', students have access to their results after completing the test.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The Sulitest was offered to University of Tasmania students enrolled in the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainable Living and completing the Communicating Sustainability unit. Approximately 400 students were enrolled in this unit.
The test was offered online via the Sulitest portal, and students were given two weeks to complete the test. Students were asked to complete the survey twice, in March (pre-assessment) and October (post-assessment).

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Sulitest provides a report of the results overall, and compares the session results with other organisations in Australia and worldwide. Reports show a general improvement from 69 (56%) to 74 (58%) points. This compares with 62% in Australia and 57% worldwide. The largest improvement was in relation to the 'Role to play, individual and systemic change' theme (from 73% to 80%).
Sulitest also provides a report for SDG themes related to the questions included in the Module. Reports showed a clear improvement in questions related to 'Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality' and 'Partnership for the goals', with 7 and 43 percent points more respectively in the post-assessment test.
