Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
STARGATE/SpaceX

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Inaugurated in 2019, the STARGATE (Spacecraft Tracking and Astronomical Research into Gigahertz Astrophysical Transient Emission) Technology Center marks a historical development for UTRGV. Physics and Astronomy professor Dr. Rick Jenet conceived of this center as an opportunity for UTRGV students to be involved in all aspects of space exploration as a public-private partnership between UTRGV´s Center for Advanced Radio Astronomy (CARA) and SpaceX (new launch facility established in South Texas). As a collaborative effort exploring radio frequency technology, the center will produce research for a variety of academic and commercial applications, providing an array of spaces including laboratories, classrooms and business incubator offices. This means that STARGATE holds the potential to address space exploration and technology development through a social enterprise lens, making UTRGV´s astrophysics program unique in its kind. As a study of the universe and our place in it, astrophysics is essential for understanding the sustainability of our planet. To best understand our climate and climate research, space exploration will spearhead innovative and groundbreaking discoveries and recommendations on how we practice on a micro and macro scale of living and planning.

The South Texas region has unique demographic challenges in the United States. By affording access to and opportunity in the areas of mathematics, physics, engineering, etc, the STARGATE center is set to produce a positive socio-economic impact in the region, as well as to promote inclusivity in the field of space exploration. Furthermore, the center is expected to operate under sustainable practices, and to involve the community as we have seen with its partner the SpaceX launch facility in Boca Chica, Brownsville, who expanded their solar system ground mount with the help of local company, South Texas Solar Systems.
