A brief description of the diversity, equity, and/or inclusion recognition:
For its efforts in accelerating Latino student success in higher education, UTRGV was named among 10 universities from across the United States to receive the 2021 Excelencia in Education distinction. Launched in 2004 in Washington, D.C., Excelencia in Education accelerates Latino student success in higher education by promoting Latino student achievement, conducting analysis to inform educational policies, and advancing institutional practices while collaborating with those committed and ready to meet the mission.
The Seal of Excelencia is a national certification for institutions that strive to go beyond enrollment to intentionally SERVE Latino students. Excelencia in Education recognizes colleges and universities for intentionally SERVING Latino students and for demonstrating positive student outcomes. It is a comprehensive certification with a framework for serving Latino students—not just enrolling them. It identifies trendsetting institutions and helps other institutions that aspire to better serve their students.
Programs like Tuition Advantage, dual credit, and the College of Sciences STEM initiatives contributed to UTRGV earning the certification. Those programs and other UTRGV incentives have made the dream of a higher education possible for students, of whom 93 percent of the undergraduate population identify as Hispanic/Latino.
