The entire BC Public Sector purchases offset in the same way, with the Provincial Government of British Columbia's Climate Action Secretariat (CAS) sourcing verified emission reduction units and retiring them on the behalf of the public sector.

A baseline year of 2015 was adopted because this is when UFV began tracking GHG data in a more detailed fashion, and it was also when efforts to reduce GHG emissions on campus began to be more formalized.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
UFV has continued to reduce its carbon emissions, recording a 29% overall reduction in total carbon emissions from 2009 to 2021.

In 2021, the University continued to implement projects that support our efforts to minimize emissions, these included:
- The development of a Sustainable Events Checklist & Certification Program aimed at reducing the environmental impact of campus-held events.
- Completion of the PV Solar project generating 104 MWh of electricity in 2021 (17% of the electricity used by the building).
- Envelope upgrades including the replacement of the building cladding (EIFS), doors and windows with a new energy-efficient envelope.
- Addition of CO2 sensors on air handling equipment with recirculated air. This increases the opportunity for increased use of fresh air and free cooling.
- Carpentry dust collector upgrades that included the installation of a variable frequency drive to reduce the need of the building reheat unit and improve the indoor air quality of the carpentry shop.
- Domestic hot water system upgrades that include high-efficiency heater retrofits.
- Make-up air unit upgrades.

In 2021, UFV participated in the FortisBC Energy Specialist Program as well as the BC Hydro and FortisBC led Energy Wise Network. Both programs look to help organizations foster a culture of strategic energy and carbon management within the organization.

Emissions from imported electricity are low due to BC Hydro's low-emission grid, which is comprised of 97% hydroelectricity.

BC Hydro is the primary supplier of electricity in the Province of British Columbia.
