A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:
The survey is given to RA's during sustainability orientations and at sustainability tabling events. At the tabling events, students are mostly first year students. Paper surveys are provided and later entered by student staff into a digital spreadsheet. Of the respondents, 91% lived on campus and 9% lived off campus.
A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:
About 2.5% of Stockton students completed the survey. Of those, 91% lived on campus and 9% lived off campus. 37% responded correctly when asked which statement best describes sustainability with a response of "Balancing environmental, social and economic systems”. Other top answers were "Recycling" (18%), and "Being good to the environment" (18%). A majority of students do not practice reuse when it comes to taking food to-go from the University Center. 17% said that they use a reusable clamshell through Pacific’s Tiger To-Go program when getting food to go even though 44% were aware of the program. This will inform future efforts to better market the program and remove barriers for example, by highlighting the benefits of the program and giving away free eco-clamshells.
When asked what sustainable living topics they are most interested in, students indicated that they are most interested in energy savings, sustainable living on a budget, green cleaning and water savings. These responses will inform our future workshops and programs. When asked how important access to certain campus resources are for their quality of life on campus, the leading items were access to recycling, access to a kitchen and STRIPES (safe transportation).
