A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Sustainability is included in Orientation Week, which typically takes place in early September prior to the beginning of classes. Sustainability is included in 3 orientation events.
The first is the O-week resource fair, where students are introduced to various departments and offices at UTM. The Sustainability Office has a booth at this fair where students are engaged in interactive activities such as the garbage-sorting game, with reusable cutlery sets given out as prizes. Students are also given information about what the Sustainability Office is, what we do, and how they can get involved through volunteer or work-study opportunities.
The second event is the Real Talk sessions. One of the offered sessions is a nature hike, where students are taken on a guided hike of the UTM nature trail and learn about the natural history of UTM, the natural areas surrounding the campus (including the Credit River), and some of the flora and fauna that are found on campus. Another session offers training on how to be environmentally-friendly while studying or living on campus.
The third event is the annual Credit River cleanup. The Credit River runs directly adjacent to the campus and is surrounded by parkland. Every year, students help to protect the natural beauty and habitat of the river by participating in the clean-up, where students collect litter found in the area.
O-week is open to all new to UTM students, and is offered free of charge.
