1st campaign

Name of the campaign:
Tote Your Trash

A brief description of the campaign:
As part of Sustainability Week activities during March 2020, a campaign aimed specifically at faculty & staff members was designed entitled "Tote Your Trash". Employees were encouraged to sign up for the program and received a free reusable tote bag. Throughout the course of the week, participants placed all their accumulated trash in the bag, and at the conclusion of the week, participants weighed their bag and sent the weight to the campaign organizer. The aim of the campaign was to get employees to realize how much garbage they generate and from what sources, so that they could make more responsible choices in the future to minimize their trash output.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
A total of 30 staff members participated in Tote Your Trash. The average weight of trash collected through the week was 206g per participant. Participant feedback indicated that the initiative helped with being mindful of what they use on a daily basis and encouraged waste reduction.

2nd campaign

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
UTM Silver Fair Trade Campus Designation

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
In November 2019 the Hospitality & Retail Services department at UTM earned the first silver Fair Trade Campus designation in all of Canada! In order to earn the designation the department needed to run a number of events and educational opportunity that involved the UTM community. Once we earned the designation, we also hosted a large-scale event in the form of a Fair Trade Market!

We hosted events at the Fair Trade Café, the Fair Trade Corner, Colman Commons, and the North Side Bistro. Whether it is a formal informational event, a free giveaway, or surprise & delight engagements, we continue to engage with staff, faculty, and students 1:1 throughout the year and connect regarding our Fair Trade commitment, our Fair Trade products, and special events!

Hospitality & Retail Services gave out reusable mugs and discussed Fair Trade with each recipient. Follow up events were held where community members can get a free Fair Trade coffee or tea if they bring their reusable mug. Again, they must engage with us and discuss Fair Trade! If UTM community members bring their own reusable mugs to get a beverage, they get a discount – with the highest discounts being on Fair Trade tea & coffee. This is an incentive for people to choose Fair Trade over non-Fair Trade options.

We hosted a Breakfast ‘n Learn with Doi Chaang where they talked about their brand, Fair Trade, and Sustainability. It was hosted at the Fair Trade Corner. We offered a unique UTM Fair Trade Latte special for the event!

We provide incentives to choose Doi Chaang Fair Trade coffee over other coffee options on campus by offering a free coffee every 9 coffees.

Fair Trade Campus week was celebrated from October 28 - Nov 1, 2019. Events held during the week included free Fair Trade banana smoothie giveaway, free fair trade lattes, free chocolate bars & info session on Fair Trade chocolate, and ice cream coupon giveaways (for Fair Trade products). All giveaways provided recipients the opportunity to learn about Fair Trade & the Fair Trade products that are sold on campus.

To celebrate UTM’s achievement (first and only Silver Fair Trade Campus in Canada) we decided to host a big event called the Fair Trade Market.

The Fair Trade Market included some vendors (both national and local) setting up a table and either showing, sampling, or selling their products. Vendors included coffee, clothing, flowers, and chocolate. Hospitality & Retail services had 4 tables and served Fair Trade hot chocolate, chocolate, almonds, UTM Fair Trade banana bread with Fair Trade bananas, chocolate, sugar, and cinnamon, and UTM Fair Trade granola bars made with Fair Trade sugar, cinnamon, and chocolate.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Events that were held at on-campus outlets yielded a total of over 4,400 1:1 engagements with students, staff, and faculty during the fall/winter of 2019/2020.

Approximately 1,500 reusable mugs have been distributed since fall 2019. Over 4,400 discounts for bringing your own cup have been given out in the fall/winter of 2019/2020 (an increase from the previous year).

Approximately 350 free coffees have been given out through the Doi Chaang loyalty card program.

During Fair Trade campus week, over 4000 servings of Fair Trade products were sampled, and 250 reusable mugs were distributed.

At the Fair Trade market, over 400 samples were given away and most of the people who stopped by the market interacted with vendors and Hospitality & Retail Services staff about Fair Trade.
