Repair Cafe
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Repair Café is an international movement that began in the Netherlands in 2009. In 2017, UTM began hosting a series of Repair Cafés on campus.
Repair Café events allow campus community members (faculty, staff, and students) to bring broken items to the café, where they are repaired by volunteer “fixers” who not only repair the item, but also teach the attendee what they are doing and how they can fix it themselves next time. Items that are commonly brought to Repair Café include lamps, chairs, headphones, clocks, and clothing. UTM began hosting 2 Repair Café events per year, but this was recently expanded to 3 annually due to popular demand.
Repair Café is a community building event that not only keeps usable items out of landfill, it also encourages repair culture and passes on repair skills as the fixers work with the attendee to repair their item. The event receives overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees and fixers alike, all of whom share their enjoyment of the event and their satisfaction with newly-repaired items.
